Worried about possible violence after dark, the Kennedy administration had insisted that the Mall needed to be clear and all out-of-town marchers back on their busses and trains before nightfall. Teams of volunteers swept the Mall that evening, picking up tons of trash. News reports the next day stressed the size of the crowd and the peacefulness of the march.
